Montijo to host Portuguese premiere of the Manual

Montijo to host Portuguese premiere of the Manual

After three sold-out sessions in Patras (Greece), it is time for the town of Montijo to host the Portuguese premiere of the play A Manual on Work and Happiness. On April 13 and 14, 18 habitants from Montijo, with no theatre background, will get on stage for the very first time in Cinema-Teatro Joaquim d’Almeida.

The play is the result of a 3-week artistic residency coordinated by Portuguese company mala voadora. The local community worked along with director Jorge Andrade and professional actor Vítor d’Andrade in the making of a play based on texts by Catalan author Pablo Gisbert.

Early February, the Montijo municipality had launched an open call targeting local habitants with no experience in performing arts. The venue intensified its audience development strategies by approaching the population in their daily environment (streets, bars, markets, schools…), encouraging them to join the project and collectively reflect upon the themes of the play: the link between work and happiness and the potential features of work in future societies.

After the Montijo dates, mala voadora will travel to Alcobaça, in the central region of Portugal, for yet another residency which will deliver a play with a different cast, scheduled for May 11 and 12 in Cine-Teatro de Alcobaça João d’Oliva Monteira.
